Field Trip: Exploring the Connecticut National Estuarine Research Reserve

Saturday, April 20, 2024

1:00pm - 4:00p.m.

The Long Island Sound is considered one of Connecticut's Greatest Natural Treasures. It provides countless recreational opportunities, serves as a critical habitat for fish and other marine wildlife, and improves the quality of life in Connecticut.

The Connecticut National Estuarine Research Reserve (CT Reserve) was designated in Jan 2022 and is one of 30 Research Reserves in the country that are focused on research, education, and stewardship of estuarine ecosystems. With more than 52,000 acres of marsh, upland, and open water, the CT Reserve provides essential habitat for wildlife, offers educational opportunities for students, teachers, and the public, and serves as a living laboratory for scientists. Bluff Point State Park is a very special place and celebrated as not only one of the Reserve’s land-based sites, but also a Long Island Sound Study Stewardship Site.

During this field trip, you’ll join Larissa Graham (CT Reserve) and Maggie Cozens (CT Sea Grant) to explore Bluff Point State Park. We will take a walking tour from the parking lot to the bluff and talk about the ongoing efforts and educational programming of both the CT Reserve and the Long Island Sound Study. Participants should dress for the outdoors and be prepared to walk approx. 3.5 miles on mostly flat ground.

Directions: Use your GPS to travel to Bluff Point State Park, 55 Depot Rd, Groton, CT 06340. Once at the park, continue on Depot Rd under the train tracks and straight until you reach the parking lot. You’ll see a lawn with many picnic tables and a trailhead – we will meet here.

If you have any questions, call Larissa (CT Reserve Education Coordinator) at 860-446-7371.
